"My" Greater Region in 2030 - opinions, hopes and realities

GEF, with the support of the Luxembourg Green Foundation "Gréng Steftung", is organising a round...

The round-table is part of a project aimed at discussing, promoting and analysing scenarios for the sustainable development of the cross-border region in the heart of Europe. In the context of the current financial and economic crisis, it becomes clear that more sustainable economic strategies, with better balanced efforts on social cohesion and the environmental rehabilitation of the whole region need to be considered. The project "Luxembourg and the Greater Region" aims to address these efforts and to discuss them from a European perspective.

Although debates and discussions on the financial and economic crisis are abundant at the national levels, they have not reached much beyond national borders. The round table "My Greater Region in 2030" aims to bring together and identify regional visions on the potential development of the Luxembourg and Greater Region Euro-region, starting from the seemingly naive question "Where do I see "my" Greater Region in 2030?"

The Euro-region Luxembourg and the Greater Region

Luxembourg and the Greater Region is the most multilateral of the over 70 cross-border regions in Europe, including Luxembourg, the French and German speaking communities in Belgium, the Lorraine province in France and the Saarland and Rheinland-Pfalz departments in Germany. The region numbers approximately 11,2 million inhabitants.

The seminar addressed young people with little economic knowledge, in order to introduce them to the basic notions of economy and to provide an overview on the current economic debates.

Twentyfour participants from sixteen European countries attended the training. The seminar was conceptualized as a combination of lectures, workshops, debates and educational role-play games. All these offered an opportunity to the participants to learn about the history of economic thoughts, to understand the main differences between the various economic systems, as well as to grasp the concepts of growth and development.

The training was carried out without cancelling any session, despite the difficulties posed by the volcanic eruption in Iceland which did not permit the contracted European resource persons to travel to Serbia. Local speakers were swiftly arranged, and the preparatory team asumed the responsibility of carrying out certain parts of the agenda. The feedback of the participants' was positive, which is an encouraging sign for the follow-up of this training, for a more advanced level of economic knowledge, in autumn 2010.
